Dentists are the specialists in the care and maintenance of human teeth, the oral cavity, maxillofacial area and associated structures.

Dental surgery is a process used in removing and repairing teeth which have succumbed to modern day living with the main culprit being dental caries. Decayed teeth can be filled with dental amalgam, dental composite, dental porcelain and precious or non-precious metals. If they are too decayed and beyond repair, the teeth have to be extracted.

Dentists encourage prevention of dental caries through proper hygiene (tooth brushing and flossing), fluoride, and tooth polishing. Dental sealants are plastic materials applied to one or more teeth, in order to stop or delay dental caries or other various types of tooth decay. Nearly all general practitioners of dentistry can do restorative, prosthetic, endodontic therapy, periodontal therapy, and exodontia, on top of the everyday dental examinations.

Many oral diseases (e.g. bilateral odontogenic keratocysts) and abnormalities (e.g. several unerupted teeth) can indicate systemic, neural, or other diseases.  Oral and maxillofacial surgery are in a more specialized area of dental surgery.

Dentistry is the less painful modern method of dealing with teeth and teeth health issues in the western world today.
